The scale below may, or may not reflect the actual "personality", or the social level of each hedgie, nor does it take into account their individual "grumpiness" if they happen to be quilling. The personality and social level of each hedgie is quite a different thing when compared to the temperament.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND that ALL animals can bite if they are upset or aggravated, no matter how sweet they are!!

This Is The Temperament Scale I Use

10. SUPER SWEET   Trusting and social all of the time, no matter what. Will usually have a great personality as well.

9. VERY SWEET   Loves to play and is active, and wants to explore all of the time. My be slightly huffy if awoke from a sound sleep, but has no problem interacting and being social after that. Will typically have a great personality.

8. SWEET   May lick and "love bite" or nip but not an aggressive bite. Loves to play and climb, but may be a little grumpy when first being woke up from a sound sleep. Does not like to ball up at all when held. Usually has a lot of energy, and is mostly in a good mood.

7. MOODY   Between being a bit shy to being sweet, depending on his or her mood at the time. Usually balls up slightly when first picked up, and then un-balls quickly after. may or may not lick or "love bite", again depending on mood or time of day/night. Easy to get along with, ok with being handled by more than one person at a time. Good with other animals, ok for older children.

6. SOMEWHAT SHY   Pops or clicks when picked up, especially if sound asleep. Begins to build a level of trust fairly quickly. May have to rebuild trust with each new person, animal, surrounding he/she comes in contact with. Takes a little extra time to un-ball, but not always. will unexpectedly dart, or attempt to run from being held as they become used to the person holding them. Still may unexpectedly ball up with unexpected movement, loud or sharp noises, or at times when being placed back into his or her habitat. (Most hedgehogs actually fall into this category)

5. SHY   Pops and clicks until comfortable, may unexpectedly ball up with movement, unexpected noise or sounds. Generally does not like to have face touched, but with time and patience, will eventually tolerate it. Ok with the right person willing to take the time to work with him/her.

4. VERY SHY    Pops and clicks because he or she does not want to be bothered. Will eventually come around with a lot of time, built up trust and patience. Might not be good around young children, and would prefer to keep to himself/herself.

3. GRUMPY   Does not like to be picked up, held, pet, and prefers no human interaction if possible, is not aggressive, but will make it know that he/she does not choose to be social with humans. may or may not get along with other animals. Pops, clicks, jumps, and hisses, stays in a ball most of the time. May un-ball slightly if in a good mood, and very comfortable.

2. UNSOCIAL   Doesn't want anything to do with social interaction, will not un-ball Hisses, pops, clicks, generally unfriendly, stay in a ball, may occasionally bite if aggravated or irritated.

1. AGGRESSIVE   Shows his/her inability to be social or cooperative, bites or charges to warn off.

TBD = To Be Determined.
